Are we being good ancestors?

Based on a book [underland by Robert Macfarlane]

As Sweden struggles to meet its growing electricity demand, overconsumption of electricity becomes a very urgent issue.

Electricity consumption

Are we being good ancestors?’ is a project challenging the norms of electricity consumption as our daily lives are becoming increasingly electric. Innovation is here to provide us with solutions for certain issues but in many cases these solutions are contradictory. Reducing CO2 emissions by using an electric car is a wonderful achievement however these cars have batteries that need to be charged, and will inevitably be discarded once the car is no longer needed. To what extent is innovation providing us sustainable solutions? How can everyday citizens make the right choices to live sustainably?

The starting point of this camping began with the 12th chapter of Underland (Robert Macfarlane, 2020), where Macfarlane visits a nuclear waste repository in Finland. He raises concerns about nuclear power and waste disposal. As nuclear energy is used to produce electricity radioactive waste is likewise generated.

Nuclear waste’s high radioactivity is by all means a huge danger, but the fact it remains radioactive for thousands of years is a difficult fact to digest. ‘What legacies will we leave behind, not only for the generations that succeed us but also for the epochs and species that will come after ours? Are we being good ancestors (Macfarlane, 2020)?’

Innovation vs. sustainability

The overconsumption of electricity starts with the overconsumption of electronics. Have you ever wondered about how many electronic devices you own, and how many of these could potentially be replaced by non-electric alternatives? Innovations improve the life of humanity, but to what extend do we truly need these improvements, and how sustainable is our lifestyle if we keep up this pace?

Considering the long-term consequences of our current pace of innovation-driven living raises crucial questions about addressing the balance between progress and environmental sustainability. Will we be able to say that we were good ancestors?
